Marinella Senatore will exhibit at Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town in 2019 thanks to Italian Council

The exhibition The School of Narrative Dance / Cape Towninvestigates modes of collective creativity through the use of body, dance and singing as expressions of freedom and forms of resistance. The project, curated by Marcella Beccaria with the curators of Iziko, is realized in collaboration with our museum and is the winner of the 4thedition of Italian Council of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries (DGAAP) of MiBAC.

 The School of Narrative Dance / Cape Town will open in September 2019 at IzikoSouth African National Gallery and it will involve a parade that Senatore will envision especially for Cape Town. The parade, together with the process of cultural research and exchange with local communities, will be the subject of a new film by Senatore that will become part of the Permanent Collection of Castello di Rivoli thanks to Italian Council’s support.

The School of Narrative Dance / Cape Town – The Filmwill be shot during a performance held in Cape Town and during its preparations. Expanding on the themes developed during the parade, the film will explore the multifaceted forms and rich legacies of protest in South Africa in close dialogue with the participants involved.

The School of Narrative Dance / Cape Town is a project by Marinella Senatore, curated by Marcella Beccaria and the Curatorial Department of Iziko, and promoted by Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Torino, in collaboration with IzikoSouth African National Gallery, Cape Town, winner of the 4thedition of Italian Council (2018), a competition conceived by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries (DGAAP) – an organism of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, to promote Italian contemporary art in the world.

Biography
Marinella Senatore (Cava de’ Tirreni, Salerno, 1977). She lives and works between Paris and Rome.

Amongst that, she was invited to participate in various residency programs including: Artist-in-Residence-Grant by Stiftung Kunst & Musik für Dresden, Dresden (2017); Centre International d’Accueil et d’Echanges des Récollets, Paris (2016); Viafarini DOCVA, Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan (2012); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2011); ISCP-International Studio and Curatorial Program, Brooklyn, New York (2011); FAR-Antonio Ratti Foundation, Como (2005).
In 2017, Senatore won the International Art Grant, Dresden. In 2014 the artist won “MAXXI Prize”, MAXXI Museum, Rome and was the recipient of the “Museum Calls Artist” from AMACI, the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums. In 2013 she won the “Fellowship for Young Italian Artists” at Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Torino. In 2011 Senatore won the “Franco Zeffirelli Italian Affiliated Fellowship in Visual Arts” at The American Academy in Rome and a finalist for the “Furla Art Award”. In 2010 she won “The New York Prize” by Italian Academy at Columbia University, Italian Cultural Institute in New York and Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, New York; the “21st Bellisario Award”; the “Gotham Prize”, Italian Institute of Culture, New York and the “Terna Prize 03”, Rome. In 2009 she was recipient of Dena Foundation Fellowship, for Art Omi, Ghent, NY.In 2011 she wasinvited by the curator Bice Curiger to the 54. Biennale d’Arte di Venezia ILLUMInazioni / ILLUMinations.
