Salone del Libro 2024

The Castello di Rivoli Education Department for the 2024 Salone Internazionale del Libro di Torino

Design and installation of the BookStock space, curated by Paola Zanini

The Education Department of Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art will create the scenographic display of the Bookstock for 2024, in relation to the current theme of Imaginary Life.
For almost thirty years the Education Department has been defining the visual identity of the area that the Salone dedicates to younger people: starting from the work of contemporary artists such as René Magritte and the Surrealists, but also Andy Warhol, of whom the Castello di Rivoli hosted a site specific exhibition, in addition to Rossella Biscotti and Irene Dionisio, in the Museum Collection, the project elaborates and expresses the imaginary life of the underwater world, populated by phantasmagoric animal and plant creatures: under the surface of the sea, which with its depths still largely unexplored leaves ample space to the imagination, we find a different observation point on reality, an imaginative vision, from which a new and renewed life appears possible.
Starting from a sort of aquarium, where even the real creatures seem to be the fruit of the imagination since they belong to an almost unknown and submerged world, the aim is to revive the gaze, in an immersion in wonder, moving from depth to the surface, from the abyss to the light.
The silhouettes of the fish will also be read as large eyes and will express the idea of seeing beyond, thanks to the power of imagination. The BookStock setup intends to be a way of cataloging and imagining new scenarios to create new worlds, also to embrace more sustainable lifestyles, drawing from the experience of art. We want to start from here to dive into imaginary life.

The project is shared and implemented with the many classes involved by the Education Department and will continue to live even after the end of the Book Fair. In fact, thanks to the collaboration between the Education Department and TorinoReteLibriPiemonte – Coordination of School Library Networks, the setup will be re-used to transform classrooms and libraries of the schools participating in the project, into wonderful imaginary worlds, in the full spirit of the proposal.

Finally, in relation to the theme, this year too the Education Department at the Salone del Libro will propose a rich calendar of workshops open to everyone, schools and families.
