Renovation

The first renovation works of the Castello di Rivoli were made in occasion of the celebrations of the centenary of the Unification of Italy in 1961 thanks the young turinese  architect Andrea Bruno. Unfortunately that time budget was only enough to repair the structure damages . Somer years later, in 1967  Bruno pulled down the  decayin parts  of the hall, keeping to monitor the structure that in 1978  was in a terrible situation, infatc the water infiltrations damaged the walls, the ceilings, the frescos, the stuccos, and the first collapses happened. The Region of Piemonte decided to start the renovation and to take care the building for 30 years  and open it to the public. The works started in 1979 and the Museum inauguration was on 18 th decenber 1984. It has been decided to keep the surviving historical traces giving the right importance to all the moment of the life of the Castle, starting from the Juvarra building site, the Randoni’ s one till the Army period.  Andrea Bruno avoided falsifications and completions, respecting the architecture, that becomes real image of the history of the building. He preserved the internal and external decorations, stuccos, paintings damaged by the time and the men. Andrea Bruno decided to give to the public the example of integration restoring two rooms, one at the first floor made during the Juvarra’s period, and the second in the Dukes of Aosta apartment .  Bruno enhanced the unfinished hall, installed the  sporto panoramico that juts out from the great brick wall of the Castle , conceived the great suspended staircase, or the gangway over the great vault of the room 18, putting in connection the past and the present. The Castle has several historical rooms with rich decorations, that remember the  splendours of the dinasty, and the important moments lived in Rivoli, it has even some rooms unfinished without any decorations. In the meantime the works started in  Manica Lunga that had to host again like the beginning a space for the exhitions. In Manica Lunga the staircases and the lift are external, and they have been made in steel and glass to give the possibility to observe the whole unfinished structure.  Andrea Bruno has used for the new structures modern materials, becoming a real pioneer of the reversibility, stressing again the relationship between the present and the past. In Rivoli the building and the contemporary art  dialogue with the contemporary artists.
